Good Walls

In our culture today there is a lot of conversation about demolishing walls. Many of us remember the famous words of President Ronald Reagan at the Berlin Wall in Germany in 1987, “Mr. Gorbachev,, tear down this wall!”.   Yes, there are some walls which need to come down in our lives, community and nation. We need to tear down the walls of deceit and corruption, walls of racism and favoritism, walls of pride and prejudice, and barriers that prevent people from opportunities that all should be free to enjoy.

An ancient city without a wall was wide open to be plundered by enemies. A city’s walls helped to protect people and their households. Walls provided security. Nehemiah was grieved when he heard that the wall of Jerusalem was “broken down.”   So there are some walls that are good and necessary: Walls that can protect from harm and evil influences. In our lives, we need spiritual walls to help us guard our hearts so that we can be loyal to our spouse and faithful to our family, friends, and community. Our spiritual lives also need walls to protect our relationship with God.

Do any walls need to be rebuilt in your life? Do some walls need to come down, and others go up? Ask God for the wisdom to build a life that honors him faithfully. The book of Nehemiah is one of the most helpful pictures we have on how to rebuild. Thank you for taking this 52-day journey. I can’t wait to hear what God BUILDS in your life!
